The first step in your audiobook publishing journey is to decide how and where you want your audiobook distributed.

You have some options, and I can’t make this decision for you, but I can help you make a little sense of all the information.

The Audiobook Empire

The Audiobook Empire is a full service production house. This is always my top recommendation. They handle all of the Post-production and  Distribution, as well as help with Marketing and Promotion! They are a joy to work with; In fact I actually reduce my rate when working through The Audiobook Empire because they make my job so much easier! They also don’t take any royalties from your audiobook sales!!!

ACX
(The Audiobook Creation Exchange)

ACX is the oldest player in the game. Owned and operated by Amazon it is an easy DIY option for Audio Publishing and Distribution. Choose either an Exclusive (40% Royalty) or Non-Exclusive (25% Royalty). Exclusive means your audiobook will only be available through Audible.com, Amazon.com, and iTunes. Non-Exclusive means it will be on those three and anywhere else you’d like to have it (including the possibilities of Libraries!)

Findaway Voices

Findaway Voices is a good alternative to ACX for DIY Audiobook Publishing. The process is similar to ACX, but one of the big differences is that you get to set the price of your audiobook. This gives you much more control over your income from the audiobook, as well as the ability to do sales and promotions.

The Process

Once you’ve decided on a platform and we’ve signed all the contracts through them, it’s time for the fun part! Creating an excellent audiobook!

Below I’ve broken my process down into 4 main steps. Prep, Record, Proof, Edit and Master.

Step 1: Prep

I always read through the whole book before doing anything. I take summary notes of each chapter, as well as each character. I look for names and words that I don’t know, and make a list to discuss pronunciations with you.

Step 2: Record

I record my performance of the book. This is the most time consuming part of the process, but also the most fun! If we’re using ACX or Findaway, I’ll send you a 15 min sample for your approval, just to make sure that our visions of the audiobook align. Once that is approved I’ll also send an invoice for half of the estimated total, and finish recording the book.

Step 3: Proofing

Next I send the finished recording as well as the manuscript to a proofing service, where someone listens to the entire audiobook while following along with the manuscript. They send me back a list of corrections for both narrating mistakes and any extraneous noises. I’ll then record Pick-ups for each mistake.

Step 4: Edit and Master

Almost finished! Now I take those Pick-ups and edit them seamlessly into the whole. After that I Master the whole audiobook so that the listener gets a smooth and easy listening experience without any jarring volume changes or distracting noises. Then I send you a final invoice and release the files for distribution once it’s been paid.

Shuck’s Sound Bites – My AudioNewsletter

I send out a once monthly AudioNewsletter to keep in touch and let people know what new books I’m working on. I promise it’s only once a month, and I keep it nice and short. Let’s be honest, we all have too many emails already, right?
